Women's Volleyball Takes First Conference Win in Victory Over Oakland City

OAKLAND CITY, IN – The Brescia University women's volleyball team secured their first conference win as they defeat Oakland City in four sets. This marks just the 9th win against the Mighty Oaks since 1997. The Bearcats extend their record to 5-14 overall and 1-2 in RSC play.

The Lady Bearcats started off early on a 6-0 run against the Mighty Oaks in set one. A Brescia service error finally gave Oakland a chance to serve as they surged out on a run of their own. Coach Emma Derry called a timeout to slow the momentum A service ace by Katie Fitzgerald gave way to a four-point lead for the Bearcats. The attacking front for BU continued to pummel the ball into the court as they take set one, 25-19. 

Oakland City was able to even up the set scores in set two as Brescia struggled to keep the ball in play.

After regrouping for set three, the Bearcats finally found their rhythm as they pushed out to a 15-8 lead over the Mighty Oaks. OCU tried to make the set interesting they took advantage of a service ace and an attack error to get them within two of the Bearcats lead. Back-to-back kills by the freshman hitter, Callie Mason, sealed the set three win for the Bearcats with a final score of 25-21.

BU was just one set away from earning just their 9th win against the Mighty Oaks as the fourth set battle ensued. OCU struggled on the attacking front giving the first three points to the Bearcats. BU maintained at least a four point lead the entire set as they picked up the match win with a final score of 25-22.

Jasmin Jones led the attacking with 14 kills on 36 total chances along with two block assists. Callie Mason had 12 kills on 43 total chances while digging 25 balls and five blocks. The senior setter in Cheaney Archer assisted 40 times while grabbing three kills and 16 digs. Libero, Campbell McBride, grabbed 19 digs. Katie Fitzgerald had a team and career high of seven service aces.

The Bearcats will travel to New Albany, IN this coming Tuesday to take on IU Southeast in another conference matchup with a 6pm tipoff.
