Volleyball Splits in Day One of the Eutectic Classic

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Brescia University women's volleyball team split day one of the Eutectic Classic with a win against York University and a loss to Culver-Stockton. The Bearcats extend their record to 3-11 on the year.

Match 1: Bearcats 3 York 0

The Bearcats fought their way to a three-set win against York University in match one of the day with scores of 27-25, 25-17, and 25-23. The Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 lead to start the event as the Bearcats took no time into settling the score later in the match. York had built up a five-point lead over BU following back-to-back kills by the Panthers. Brescia ended set one surging out on a 3-0 run to take the first set. There was no question who was taking set two as BU commanded the attacking front, running out to a 20-10 lead. Obviously, the Bearcats took set two with the match sweep in sight. Set three went back and forth with the Panthers, but the Bearcats stood strong to get the win in match one of the classic.

Maddy Pate lead with 14 kills on 23 chances, hitting an insane .565 percentage while Callie Mason followed behind with 12 of her own and a team tying 13 digs. Francisca Sousa held the defense side of the ball with 6 blocks.

Match 2: Culver Stockton 3 Bearcats 1

Match two for the Bearcats ended in a four-set contest against the Wildcats with final scores of 25-19, 25-23, 25-21, and 25-13. Despite setting the tone with set one, the Bearcats began to run out of steam after each set as the take the split on the day in the loss. Jasmin Jones and Pate each led with 10 kills apiece while Campbell McBride grabs 16 digs.

The Bearcats continue at the Eutectic Classic tomorrow, Saturday, Sep. 14 with matches against Evangel and St. Francis starting at 10:30am CT.
