Women's Basketball Secures #2 Seed in Win Over IU Southeast
OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Brescia University women's basketball team avenged their loss to the Grenadiers of IU Southeast to secure the #2 seed in the West Division with a final score of 68-61. The Lady Bearcats extended their overall record to 17-8 and River States Conference (RSC) record to 9-6.
After previously falling to the Grenadiers earlier in the season, the Lady Bearcats looked to even the record against IU Southeast. Both teams were evenly matched as a chance to host the first round of the RSC Tournament was on the line. The Grenadiers would start scoring first with a basket from deep to kick us off. Caroline Lucas and Shelbie Beatty put the Lady Bearcats up by five in the first few minutes. Turnovers and bad shot selections led to scoring droughts for both teams with a minute left in the first quarter. A 7-0 run for BU gave them an eight-point advantage going into the next quarter.
BU continued to put their foot on the gas forcing the Grenadiers into turnovers and fouls. Jenna Krampe led the way in the second quarter with eight of the Lady Bearcat's 12 points heading into halftime.
With the 11-point lead, BU connected offensively as they outscored the Grenadiers 21-13 in the third quarter where they held their largest lead of 18 points.
A late fourth quarter rally by IUS was not enough to knock off the Lady Bearcats as they secured the win and #2 seed with a final score of 68-61.
Caroline Lucas led the way with 17 points along with six rebounds and three assists. Jenna Krampe and Cassidy Morris combined for 27 points and 10 boards on the night.
The Lady Bearcats will head to Oakland City this Saturday, Feb. 21, for their regular season finale at 2pm against the Mighty Oaks.
