Lady Bearcats Handed First Loss in Conference Play
NEW ALBANY, In. – The Brescia University women's basketball team fell to IU Southeast, 90-88. The Bearcats extended their record to 11-3 overall and 3-1 in RSC play.
This matchup looked to be anyone's game as Cassidy Morris got the scoring started for the contest. Back-to-back baskets by the Bearcat's leading scorer, Caroline Lucas, gave BU an early seven-point lead. However, the Grenadiers stayed with the Bearcats as they went shot for shot. By the end of the first, a layup by IUS gave them a one-point advantage.
The Grenadiers held a six-point lead to start the second quarter but was quickly dissolved after a few baskets and a key three pointer from Shelbie Beatty. BU retained just a one-point lead going into half following a Grenadier missed shot.
The Bearcats struggled in the first part of the third quarter as they saw another deficit, this time by nine-points. An and-1 layup by Jenna Krampe fired up the Bearcat team as they looked to work their way back to the lead. Amelia Mackey nailed a dagger three to finally give the Bearcats the three-point advantage.
At the rate this matchup was going, there was no doubt the fourth would be a nailbiter. The Bearcats held a five-point lead with under five minutes to go. Unfortunately, BU couldn't maintain the lead as fouls and turnovers sealed the loss.
Caroline Lucas led the Bearcats with 19 points on 8-10 shooting as Jenna Krampe tallied yet another double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Amelia Mackey added 15 off the bench with five threes for her career high.
The Bearcats return home Tuesday, Jan. 14 as they take on division rival Oakland City at 7:30pm in the Moore Center.
