Lady Bearcats Continue Hot Streak into RSC Play
OWENSBORO, Ky. – Women's basketball continues to make their statement this year as they defeated the St. Mary of the Woods College Pomeroys in their first conference matchup of the year. The Lady Bearcats improved their record to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in RSC play.
The Bearcats were set to face the Pomeroys in the very first RSC matchup of the year for women's basketball. Landree Moons got the scoring started with a layup within the first 15 seconds. Caroline Lucas found her stroke beyond the arc on the next two possessions for the Bearcats as they took a six-point lead. With the four-point advantage, BU had one more shot as the seconds ticked down in the first, Elise Williams found Jordan Joe on the left wing to sink a buzzer beater three to end the quarter.
Joe put up two more threes to score six of the Bearcats 13 points as BU went to the break with a 34-31 lead.
Lucas went nuclear in the third quarter as she tallied a stat in every category besides a three-point basket. She scored the Bearcats first four points out of the intermission to give the Bearcats a four-point advantage. Brooklyn Stewart would get the and-1 to fall under the basket to add an extra cushion onto the BU lead. A Brescia turnover would lead to a monster chase down block by Lucas as she looked to make a statement against the Pomeroys. The Bearcats continued to push the envelope in the third as they grabbed their largest lead of the night at 14 against the visitors.
SMWC started to gain traction in the fourth as they outscored the Bearcats 23-16 with all the Bearcat's points coming from the charity stripe. BU locked down defensively as they took their first conference win with a final of 70-64.
Lucas led the Bearcat scoring with 20 on 6-10 shooting from the field, 2-3 from beyond, and 6-7 at the line along with seven rebounds. Jordan Joe was the second leading scorer with 10 points on 3-6 shooting with three threes. Jenna Krampe and Cassidy Morris crashed the boards hard as they combined for 27 total rebounds.
The Lady Bearcats will head to Kingsport, TN this coming Friday as they take on Montreat and Union Commonwealth this weekend at The Show hosted by Milligan University.
