Softball Sweeps Golden Bears on the Road

BECKLEY, Wv. – The Brescia University softball team swept the Golden Bears of WVU Tech on the road this past Saturday with final scores of 9-2 and 10-5. The Bearcats extended their overall record to 3-5 and 2-2 in River States Conference play.

Game 1: Bearcats 9 WVU Tech 2

The Golden Bears struck first in the bottom of the first with two runs on a triple an error. The Bearcats bounced back in the top of the second inning with five runs of their own. With the bases loaded, Maci Merritt hit a ball to the shortstop and reached first on an error allowing all runners to advance. Kaitlyn Bradbury plated another run on her single down the left-field line to knot the score at two. A double by Avery Riley to right center would clear the bases as the freshman put the Bearcats up 5-2. Two errors in the third and sixth innings by the Golden Bears allowed two more runs for the Bearcats. A sac fly and a stolen base fiasco put up the final two runs for BU in the top of the seventh as they clutched their first conference win.

Avery Riley drove the middle of the lineup going 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Berlyn Uken powered the bottom of the lineup going 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI, and a walk. Felicity Cunningham got the win in the circle to extend her record to 2-1 on the year with six strikeouts.

Game 2: Bearcats 10 WVU Tech 5

 The Bearcats continued their offensive momentum into game two of the day with 16 total hits and 10 runs. BU put up three runs in the second inning on a single and a double. Zoe Smithson and Avery Riley had back-to-back doubles to plate two more runs in the fifth inning. The Golden Bears showed some fight in the fifth inning, scoring four to get within one of the Bearcat lead. BU got the runs back and then some in the sixth and seventh innings extending their lead to six. WVU Tech would push across one run in the bottom of the seventh in a comeback attempt as the Bearcats came out victorious in the 10-5 win.

Kaitlyn Bradbury went 3-for-5 at the plate with three runs and an RBI. Zoe Smithson finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs and a run. Savannah Jones got her first win in the circle to extend her record to 1-2 on the year.

The Bearcats will play Lindsey Wilson at home this coming Tuesday, Mar. 11, at 1/3pm.
