Baseball Splits with Bears on Day Two of Conference Action; First No Hitter
OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Brescia University baseball team split with Shawnee State on day two of their conference opener. After taking the 16-5 loss against the Bears Saturday evening, the Bearcats bounced back on Sunday with a 10-0 win in game one and then a close 8-4 loss to end the series. The pitching duo of Dylan Warda and Jonny Foti in game two was the first no hitter dealt within the BU baseball program (since digital stats were recorded in the 2004 season). The Bearcats extended their overall record to 7-3 and River States Conference record to 1-2.
Game 1: Bearcats 10 Shawnee State 0
With the bases loaded in the first inning, the Bearcats struck first as they scored a run on a passed ball by the catcher. Chase Christie singled to right field to score Artem Logvinov from third base. Bryce Gamble reached first on a fielder's choice but scored the third run of the inning for the Bearcats on the double-play attempt. A quick inning for the defense gave the bats back to BU as a Logvinov single up the middle would plate the Bearcats' fourth run in the second.
Three more runs crossed the plate in the fourth inning to extend the Bearcat lead to 5-0. Griffin Taylor belted a ball over the left field fence on the first pitch he saw for his solo shot. Michael Ascencio then doubled off the left field wall to plate the final two runs of the inning, giving the Bearcats a 7-0 advantage. Taylor would do it all in this game as his sacrifice fly scored Kyle Brown from third in the fifth to get the Bearcats within two of the run-rule. Taylor belted another no doubter over the left center field fence to drive in the deciding two runs in the 10-0 win.
The pitching duo of Dylan Warda and Jonny Foti combined for the first no hitter in the BU Baseball program (since digital stats recorded in 2004), striking out six and walking seven batters.
Game 2: Shawnee State 8 Bearcats 4
Shawnee State plated the first run of the game on a double down the right field line in the second inning. The Bearcats got the run back and more as they put up a four run, third inning. Christie got the RBI on a ground out to the right side to knot the score at one a piece. A fielding error by the SSU defense plated another run after Gamble's RBI single, giving the Bearcats a two-run advantage. A deep line out sacrifice by Ascencio pushed the fourth and final run for BU in game two. A homerun to left center by the Bears put them in control in the fourth inning. The Bearcats could gain any momentum as they took the 8-4 loss.
Cason Troutman was handed his first loss on the bump in his 2.2 innings pitched.
The Bearcats are due to play Kentucky State at Chautauqua Park this coming Wednesday, Mar. 5, at 12pm CT.
