Lady Bearcats Pick Up First Win of the Season
OWENSBORO, KY – The women's basketball team kicked off their 2024 campaign against Cumberland (TN) at the Brescia Classic on Friday night. The Bearcats walked away with the win, 68-58, over the Phoenix. This win marked the first official win under head coach, Nick Chaykowsky.
Caroline Lucas scored the first basket for this new and improved Bearcats team as they take the lead. Down by two in the first quarter, Amelia Mackey nailed a three pointer to give the Bearcats the one-point advantage. A few turnovers and missed shots later, Mackey got the ball again, burying her second three of the quarter. BU led 23-17 at the end of the first.
Cassidy Morris extended the Bearcats lead with a three-pointer after BU struggled to score in the first three minutes of the second quarter. Both team remained scoreless until Brooklyn Stewart broke the silence with a layup. Jenna Krampe and Genesis Ghide-Bryan followed after with layups of their own for BU's largest lead of the night with the 12-point advantage.
The Bearcats kept the Phoenix at a distance for the remainder of the game as they grab their first win of the year and second win over the Mid-South opponent.
Four Bearcats ended with double digit points as Mackey led all scorers with 15 points with three three-pointers. Jenna Krampe earned her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Bearcats continue with the Brescia Classic Saturday, Nov. 2 as they face UHSP at 5:30pm.
