Lady Bearcats Routed by Eagles in Close Shooting Battle

OWENSBORO, KY – The Brescia University women's basketball team were routed by the Eagles of Midway in their second divisional matchup of the year. Despite dropping the first game by 27, the Lady Bearcats closed the gap in game two with a final score of 65-55. BU extends their record to 5-18 overall and 0-14 in RSC play.

Just like game on earlier in the year, each team sunk their shots in this back-and-forth battle. The Eagles took a three-point lead after a layup, but Raquel Crooke-Losada answered right back with a three pointer to tie the score. A Midway turnover gave the Bearcats a free possession with a minute left as Crook-Losada checked back in. She would make her second three of the quarter to give the Bearcats their first lead of the game. The teams remained at a stalemate in the start of the second quarter until a ball beyond the arc gave the Eagles a one-point lead. Back-to-back shots by Midway gave the Eagles back the lead as they stretched it to four. The Bearcats struggled with easy transition shots as the Eagles took an eight-point advantage. With under five minutes to go until half, Lindsey Peyton broke the silence for the Bearcats with a jump shot on the baseline. A difficult layup passed defenders for Paige Vanzant cut the Eagles' lead to just four. The two-woman game between Vanzant and Peyton would tie the score at 25 a few minutes before halftime. Midway would make a few more shots as they held the lead 31-27 with the second half yet to come.

Back-to-back three-pointers from each team showed that these teams meant business. A pair of clutch free throws by Paige Vanzant tied the score for the third time as BU continued to fight. The Eagles would start to pull away as they hit shots on consecutive possessions to make it a five-point game. Courtney Peyton and Genesis Ghide-Bryan brought the Bearcats closer as their two layups made it a one possession game. Lindsey Peyton free throws and a Ghide-Bryan layup gave the Bearcats their first lead since the first quarter. Both teams struggled to score in the fourth quarter until an Eagle broke the scoreless streak. The Bearcats ran out of steam in the fourth as they scored just nine points after being forced to foul for possession.

Three Bearcats ended the game in double digit points: Courtney Peyton (13), Lindsey Peyton (11), and Genesis Ghide-Bryan (10). The Peyton twins and Crook-Losada each grabbed eight rebounds as the Bearcats won the battle of the boards by just one.

The Lady Bearcats head to Oakland City on Thursday, Feb. 15, as they take on the Mighty Oaks at 5:30pm CT.
